problem
There is an annual shortfall of 2.5 million blood donations in Germany - a deficit that arises because only 3% of the population donate regularly. Young people in particular rarely or never donate blood, as the topic is often not part of their everyday lives.
solution
This is where Pulse comes in: An app that uses targeted functions to appeal to young people in particular and motivate them to donate blood regularly.
Research
online survey
In order to gain a deeper insight into the topic and public opinion on blood donation, we launched an online survey and sent it to as broad a section of the population as possible. We made sure that we formulated questions on various topics, that as many people as possible completed the survey and that they came from different age groups.

forum
The German Red Cross has a forum in its app and on its website where people can discuss all aspects of blood donation. Questions are asked, criticism expressed and answers sought in various categories. We took a look around the 'Digital donor service & app' category in particular and were able to gather important insights that have helped us in the process.
shadowing
We asked a test person to book a blood donation appointment online via the blood donation service's website. Two days later, we accompanied her to the donation centre and observed the process (shadowing). Afterwards, we conducted a short interview to gain even deeper insights into her donation process and her feelings.

Functions
appointments
Blood donation appointments are clearly displayed with relevant information such as date, time, location, distance and participating friends. Users can filter by time period and view a detailed overview of available times when selecting an appointment. After booking, the appointment confirmation can be forwarded to motivate others to donate.

donation history
The upcoming, booked blood donation appointment is displayed at the top of the history page, with an indicator as to whether the health data measured at the appointment has already been received. Past appointments are listed below this. If the user clicks on one of these appointments, they are given an overview of the appointment data and their health values.
spendi
We have built Spendi, an AI assistant, into our app that can be used around the clock instead of a hotline, which is only available for a limited time. Among other things, Spendi supports users with questions about donating blood and helps to reduce fears or uncertainties.

digital questionnaire
The digital questionnaire speeds up the donation process because only a QR code needs to be scanned on site, which contains the completed questionnaire, and is available in several languages to avoid language barriers.
extended profile
Stays abroad can be entered, whereby temporary donation blocks are automatically taken into account and notifications are paused. Donation location management makes it easier for frequent travellers and commuters to find appointments thanks to location-based suggestions. Master data can be saved in the profile and is pre-filled in the questionnaire to optimise the process. The digital donation card with QR code and Apple Wallet integration speeds up processes on site.

group and challenge
The group and challenge function promotes competition and strengthens the sense of community by comparing donated litres. This gives companies a platform to make their social commitment visible.
