Sense Project Preview

problem

Around 12 million people in Germany suffer from a pollen allergy - but the infrastructure for recording pollen levels is inadequate. There are too few pollen monitoring stations, which means that the measurement data is often inaccurate, locally inconclusive or outdated. As a result, warnings of high pollen counts often reach affected people too late, which significantly impairs their quality of life and health.

solution

Sense is a pollen protection wristband that informs the user of increased pollen count at an early stage - even before the first symptoms appear.

Research

pollen monitoring

There are comparatively few pollen monitoring stations in Germany - and these are often unevenly distributed. This results in large data gaps, particularly in rural and sparsely populated regions. For allergy sufferers, this means that they usually only notice a high pollen count when symptoms such as watery eyes, sneezing or breathing problems occur. The lack of reliable, local information makes it difficult to take early action - with noticeable consequences for health and quality of life.

Concept Overview

concept

To make everyday life easier for pollen allergy sufferers and improve their quality of life, we have developed the concept for a pollen protection wristband. This has its own measuring device, which measures passively at regular intervals, but also provides the function for active measurement. In this way, allergy sufferers are warned in good time if the pollen concentration is too high.

usability Testing

Using the functional prototypes, we carried out usability tests with five different test subjects to test our wristband and, if necessary, identify problems and improve our wristband.

Functions

pollen wristband

The wristband itself has a passive and an active measurement function, which can be started using the orange button on the outside. The LED strip on the front changes depending on the measurement result. The higher the pollen count in the air, the fuller the scale on the light bar becomes. If the personal limit value previously stored in the associated app is reached, the LED indicator increases completely and allergy sufferers receive vibration feedback to warn them.
